Other than flying United Airlines, there are other options available to earn United Airlines MileagePlus miles. After United Airlines moved to revenue based mileage earning you get next to nothing miles for flying United Airlines flights. So in addition to flying, we have to use other methods to collect United Airline miles.
Now United Airlines is introducing a new method to earn more United MileagePlus miles. You can earn United Airline miles for your brick and mortar shopping if you register your credit card with United Airlines and use the same card for shopping at a brick and mortar store.
Earn United MileagePlus Miles When you Shop at Brick and Mortar Stores
Received an email from United Airlines last week about a new way to earn United Miles. This new program is similar to earning miles for restaurant spend by registering a credit card with United Airlines and using the same card to pay for services.
Just like the restaurant program now you can register a credit card with United Airlines, and when you shop using the credit card in a brick and mortar store, you can earn additional miles for your shopping.
How to Enroll Your Card in the Instore Offer
You need to log on to your United Airlines account using the following link and enroll your credit card in the in-store offer and add the store to your card to get the additional miles. You need to use the registered card to pay for services to earn miles.
Login to your United MileagePlus frequent flyer account.
Click on Get Started to register your credit card with United MileagePlus account.
Add your credit card number to the United MileagePlus account. If you register Chase United Explorer card, you will earn additional one mile on top of any miles you earn for your in-store purchase.
You have an option to enter your mobile number when you register your credit card for your in-store purchase. When you provide your mobile number, United will send you a message whenever you earn miles through the in-store program. I just skipped that steps and I will add the number at a later date.
After registering your credit card, you need to link the in-store offer to your card.
Right after linking the store to your registered credit card you will get a message how long when the deal will expire. In my experience after I linked the card, I had about 10 hours to make my purchase using the credit card to get the miles.
This is one of the drawbacks of the in-store purchase United miles program. No one will remember to link the store offer to the credit card before going to the store.
If United wants to improve the program, United should automatically link all the available in-store to the registered card and should not force anyone to link a card to a store every time before they make a purchase.
- Earn additional United Airline miles for your in-store purchase.
- You need to link the store you are planning to visit for the purchase with the registered credit card. After you link the card the link expires after 8 hours and your miles will not get posted if you make a purchase after the in-store link expires.
- The United MileagePlus X App gives more miles than the in-store program also it is easy to use.
- Very limited number of miles earned compared to United MileagePlus X App.
- When you purchase using a debit card, you need to use the debit card without a pin like a credit card to receive the miles.
- Very limited availability of stores where you can earn United Airline miles.
The program needs to be changed and should not force anyone to choose the store before shopping. When someone adds a credit card details to the in-store program, United should automatically add all the in-store program to the registered card and should not force anyone to log on to the United account to link a store to the card.
Is this a better opportunity to earn additional United miles, NO I would stay away from this program till United make changes which allows one to easily earn miles without having to link the stores with the credit card whenever someone makes a purchase.
