I do not travel a lot on British Airways, but when I do travel, I credit my miles to British Airways Avios frequent flyer program. The Avios British Airways frequent flyer miles expires after three years if there are no mileage activity in your account.
Unlike other airlines, British Airways do not display when your frequent flyer miles will expire. But it is not very difficult to find out when your British Airways miles expires. Just simply add three years from the last date of mileage activity and arrive at the miles expiration date.
Email from British Airways about Mile Expiry
A lot of airlines will never remind you when your frequent flyer miles are going to expire. But British Airways gives you a five months notice through email and warn you about when your miles are going to expire. I recently received an email from British Airways that my miles will expire at the end of May 2017. Typically, I will wait till 60 days before the expiration of miles to extend the miles for another three years, but this time I decided to act soon to extend the miles.
It is Easy to Extend the Expiry of British Airways Miles
Unlike most of the other airlines like Singapore or Etihad which expires your miles three or two years from the date of accrual extending the expiry of British Airways miles are easy. As long as you have a mileage activity in y our Avios account, British Airways reset your miles expiration date three years from the date of mileage activity.
Using the mileage expiry as an opportunity, I am going to show you how to shop using British Airways shopping portal to earn some miles which will force a mileage activity in my British Airways account.
Seach Cash Back Monitor to Find out the Shopping Portal Offering Maximum Miles
If you have not planned which shopping portal to use, you need to check out the “CashBackMonitor” website to find out which airline shopping portal will offer you the maximum miles. But in this case, I have decided to use the British Airways Portal, but I still went to the “Cash Back Monitor” to see which airline shopping portal will offer me more miles for a purchase made through “Home Depot” online store.
I have already decided to use British Airways shopping portal for extending the expiry of my AVIOS miles, but just by luck, the British Airways Portal was offering a maximum of three miles per dollar spend for Home Depot purchase.
Sign on to British Airways Website for Shopping Portal Access
Using my online user id and password, I signed on to my British Airways account. Before you sign on to the account make sure the web page is set to country the USA.
After sign on from my AVIOS profile page, I choose the link “Collect Avios” to access the British Airways shopping portal.
On the left-hand side of the website, there was an option available to access the British Airways shopping portal. Click on the bag picture with British Airways logo, to access the shopping portal. If you click on the link “log-in and shop” you will be again asked to enter you frequent flyer account user id and password.
Search for the Store you want to Shop
Once you are in the British Airways online store, you can use the search option to find the store you want to shop or if your store is available in the list of popular store section you can directory click the store link available in the popular store section to access your online store.
I choose the “Home Depot” from the most popular store option, after selecting the option I was prompted with a message how many miles I will earn for shopping the Home Depot online store through the British Airways shopping portal as well as terms and conditions.
Most of the time you do not need to worry about the terms and conditions. But just take a look at the requirements and make sure you are eligible to receive multiple miles per dollar spend for shopping through the portal.
Shop at the Online Store
After you click on the shop now, your shopping site will open on an another browser tab. When you are shopping in your online store make sure you do not close the airline web page open in the other tab. If you close the browser tab where you have the airline website open you will not get the proper credit of the miles you earn for shopping the online shopping portal.
Just shop on the shopping site as you would normally do if you directly go to the online website for purchase.
Pay for your Purchase using Online account or as a Guest
I bought two bags of salt for $9.26 plus tax and checked out the shopping cart items. At the time of checkout, you can log in to your online store or check out as a guest. Since I already had an online account with Home Depot, I logged on and checked out the items on the card and paid for items using my points earning Bank of America Alaska Air Visa card.
I will be earning 29 British AVIOS frequent flyer miles for my $9.62 purchase in the Home Depot online store plus 10 additional Alaska Airline miles for using the Bank of America Alaska Airlines card. Please note you will not get any miles for taxes paid for the purchase.
It is very easy to shop using British Airlines online shopping portal. If you directly go to the online store and make a purchase, you will get only one mile or point if you use airline miles earning card or points earning credit card. But by using the airline shopping portal, you earn a lot of points, and you can prevent your airline miles from getting expired.
